« C8B300 after two-month hiatus 4/30/0910,000 Kettlebell Swings »

5x5 Fasted 4/27/09

Thirty-one hours fasted, I did:

5x5 70 lb. kettlebell push-press, superset with
5x5 70 lb. dumbbell row
Rest 1.5 min (All of these were single-arm)

Rest 5 minutes.

5x5 2x53 lb. kettlebell front squat, alternating with
5x5 2x53 lb. kettlebell swing
Rest as needed between each single set.

Started getting completely gassed and felt a bit like I was going to puke after the first two sets of the lower-body exercises. I attribute this to:

- first intense workout since 4/11/09
- being fasted 31 hours and first long-fasted workout in awhile

I forgot how intense alternating double-kb front squats with double kb-swings was. I am beat!

Total time: 40 minutes

Great workout, but why do you fast for longer than 24 hours?
And, more importatnly, workout without nutrition is suboptimal. At least, some Amino Acids (BCAAs) should be taken.

I actually feel like I get the most "bang for my buck" at a 30 hour fast, which is equivalent to skipping three full meals. I've experimented with a huge variation of fasting methods, and for the sporadic longer fast (i.e. longer meaning >16 hours), I like 30 over 24. Just preference I guess.

I agree that after a long fast my glycogen stores are a bit depleted, which can impair power/performance. I don't normally workout so fasted, but I like the nutrient partitioning impact of a heavy workout prior to breaking a fast (sends the nutrients to muscles preferentially - at least, so goes the reasoning). I think the most optimal fasting/nutrition combo may be what Martin Berkhan suggests over at leangains.com -- daily IF with most of the nutrition coming PWO. I had some good results with that method when I was doing crossfit last summer.

More testing is required though.

This sub-blog captures my daily workouts (if any). It was created in July and has been maintained fairly religiously since August 2008. Its purpose is to serve as a record of activity and a reminder to stay active. Theoretically, it will serve as a record of what "works." Questions or comments, just let know.
